The 2026 World Wide Technology Championship at El Cardonal at Diamante in Los Cabos features high-stakes competition as players battle for career survival and PGA Tour status with only three events left in the FedEx Cup Fall schedule.
Ben James Claims the Lead
Rookie Ben James shot a bogey-free, 8-under 64 to reach 15-under 129, securing a one-shot advantage over Peter Malnati going into the weekend. The 23-year-old registered five consecutive birdies near the turn and birdied his final hole on the Tiger Woods-designed layout. This performance marks the 14th time James has shot 65 or better since starting his professional career after playing college golf at Virginia.
“I’ve been rolling it well and playing well,” James stated.
Peter Malnati carded a matching 64 but dropped out of a tie for the lead after bogeying his final hole. The two-time PGA Tour champion stands at 14 under, while Zac Blair holds third place at 12 under following a round of 68. Stephan Jaeger and Denny McCarthy are tied for fourth at 11 under.
The Battle for Job Security
While James pursues his maiden PGA Tour victory, Malnati fights to protect his career longevity. The 39-year-old veteran aims to maintain a streak of 11 consecutive seasons with full tour privileges, as his exemption earned from winning the 2024 Valspar Championship concludes this year.
“I’m not ready to be done,” Malnati stated.
The competition carries massive implications for the FedEx Cup Fall standings, where only the top 100 players secure full tour status for 2027. Jason Day started the week precisely on the bubble at No. 100, with Mackenzie Hughes, Taylor Pendrith, and Brandt Snedeker positioned just outside the cutoff line. Additionally, players finishing between Nos. 51 and 60 will qualify for next year’s opening two signature events at Pebble Beach and Riviera.
The tournament offers a $6 million total purse, featuring $1.08 million awarded to the winner. Defending champion Ben Griffin and fellow North Carolina native Ryan Gerard are also participating in the field.
Second-round play was halted due to darkness at 5:48 p.m. local time, leaving 12 golfers to complete their rounds Saturday morning with the projected 36-hole cut standing at 5 under. Following the event in Los Cabos, the fall schedule concludes with tournaments in Texas and Georgia.
