Aki Iwai secured the outright lead at the Toto Japan Classic following a bogey-free six-under 66 on Saturday. The 24-year-old Japanese competitor advanced to a 15-under total at the Taiheiyo Club north of Tokyo. Meanwhile, Australia’s Hannah Green trails by six strokes at nine-under after carding a four-under 68, leaving her needing a remarkable comeback to catch the home favorite.

Chasing the Leader

Green progressed each day with five birdies and a single bogey in her third round, as reported by Golf Australia Magazine. She started with a 70 and followed with a 69 prior to her 68 on Saturday. Even with this solid third round, the deficit remains significant. Yubol posted eight birdies and one bogey to reach 14-under, maintaining pressure on Iwai as Sunday approaches.

Home Crowd Fueling the Leader

The gallery noise assisted Iwai in establishing her rhythm on the back nine, and she praised the spectators for shaping her mindset throughout the round. “So many spectators here and I’m so glad because … they always show me so much love all the time. And then I got confidence. That’s why I’m glad,” Iwai stated. That confidence poses a major challenge for the remaining players. Last year at the Standard Portland Classic, Iwai secured her inaugural LPGA victory, positioning herself to claim another title.

Yubol likewise benefits from having family members present in the audience. “First thing first, I love Japan,” Yubol said. “Also, my dad and mom and brother are here, so I would say the whole family here is kind of a special week for me.” This emotional encouragement may provide the key factor keeping her close to the leader. Defending champion Nasa Hataoka dropped to three shots behind after recording a 72, placing her in a difficult position to retain her crown.

Green’s Path to Victory

Green requires a low score on Sunday to secure an opportunity. Despite challenging winds on Saturday, 23-year-old LPGA Tour rookie Hwang managed to hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation. “Today the winds were strong, but I played well so I’m happy,” Hwang explained. She stands tied for third at 13-under alongside Erika Hara, with both players positioned two strokes behind the leader. Hwang acknowledged that she occasionally battles anxiety as rounds conclude. “Sometimes in the final round I have a tendency to be timid, so I want to play tomorrow aggressively and work on that,” Hwang mentioned.

Green must also adopt an aggressive strategy to prevent the title from slipping away. The Japan Classic marks the final event of the four tournaments making up the LPGA’s late-season Asian swing. Additional Australian competitors such as Robyn Choi and Minjee Lee fell out of contention following rounds of 72 and 79 respectively. The championship battle ultimately focuses on Iwai, Yubol, and Green, with Iwai holding a one-stroke advantage over Yubol and a six-stroke lead over Green.
