With only two matchdays remaining in the Apertura season of Liga MX, the competition remains wide open from the championship race down to the final playoff positions. Club America sits at the top of the standings, separated from Chivas Guadalajara and Cruz Azul only by goal difference, while Atlas trails the leaders by just two points.

Title Contenders and Stumbling Leaders

Club America boasts the strongest attack in the league, bolstered by Henry Martin returning to top form, but a challenging upcoming fixture against Pumas threatens to drop valuable points. Despite losing only twice all season, the leaders have hit a rough patch with a three-match winless streak, which includes a defeat against Pachuca and veteran top scorer Salomon Rondon, according to CBS Sports Headlines. Meanwhile, the battle for the final four playoff spots remains wide open among teams ranked fifth through 11th, with only four clubs mathematically eliminated so far.

Puebla technically remains alive in 14th place provided teams with 22 points fail to secure results, highlighting the remarkable competitiveness of the tournament. However, the current standings could produce a major upset if Monterrey fails to secure a playoff berth.

Monterrey Faces Crucial Test Against Toluca

Monterrey travels to Estadio Nemesio Diez to face Toluca on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m. ET, needing maximum points to keep their postseason hopes alive. As reported by CBS Sports Headlines, Rayados have not missed the playoffs since 2016, yet despite ranking as the third-highest-spending club behind Atlas and Club America, results have lagged under manager Matias Almeyda.

Despite boasting three of the league’s top 15 goalscorers and immense squad talent, inconsistent performances and erratic management have plagued the team. A failure to secure a victory on Saturday night would leave Monterrey with only 90 minutes remaining in the regular season to avert missing the playoffs entirely.
