Mamadou Sangaré: Brentford’s New Star Midfielder

Brentford midfielder Mamadou Sangaré has made an immediate impression in the Premier League following his club-record £39m transfer from Lens at the start of August. Former Manchester City scout and agent Youness Bengelloun recalled first encountering the 24-year-old at Rapid Vienna’s training ground in July 2025, describing him as a “footballing alien” with remarkable technique and work rate before his short stint in France for around €5m. Sangaré excelled on his Brentford debut against Tottenham, dominating the midfield and providing the assist for Keane Lewis-Potter’s opening goal, and has featured in every game ahead of a fixture against Brighton.

Early Beginnings and Leadership in Bamako

Sangaré’s football journey started at the age of six with Association Sportive Aboubacar Coulibaly (ASAC), a small club in the Faladié neighbourhood of Bamako, Mali’s capital. His first coach, Bakary Coulibaly, noted that the youngster lived near the pitch and played daily, immediately standing out as a right midfielder who was technically superior to his peers. According to Bakary Coulibaly, the player possessed an intense desire to win, held high standards for himself and his teammates, and acted as a leader who sought solutions during difficult moments.

Former Mali manager Tom Saintfiet highlighted Sangaré’s absolute dedication, stating that the midfielder manages every aspect of his professional life by strictly controlling his time for eating, sleeping, and training. Saintfiet recalled an instance when Yves Bissouma asked Sangaré about his favourite position, to which the player replied that he wanted his own, reflecting immense self-belief without arrogance. Described as shy and laid-back, Sangaré maintains complete composure under pressure, capable of keeping his cool and finding a pass when surrounded by multiple opponents.

Rise Through European Leagues

After developing at ASAC and Yeelen Olympique, Sangaré moved to Europe in September 2020 to join RB Salzburg following scout observations via video footage. Spells on loan preceded a permanent transfer to Rapid Vienna in July 2024 and a subsequent move to Lens in August 2025. During his single season in France, he helped Lens win the Coupe de France and received the Marc-Vivien Foé award as the best African player in Ligue 1.

International recognition followed when Saintfiet gave Sangaré his Mali debut in September 2024 against Mozambique, with the manager calling him every coach’s dream player. Last season, Sangaré competed in his first Africa Cup of Nations, helping Mali reach the quarter-finals. Fellow Mali midfielder Lassana Coulibaly noted that the team immediately recognized his extra quality in training, pointing to an incredible group stage performance against Comoros. Saintfiet also praised Sangaré’s loyalty and adaptability after the player readily accepted a switch to the right flank against hosts Morocco to accommodate a five-man midfield for the good of the team.

Brentford prepare to face Brighton with Saintfiet expressing confidence that the midfielder’s trajectory will continue upward beyond his current club.
