Cowboys Update Trade Plans Ahead of 2026 NFL Deadline

Dallas Cowboys executive Stephen Jones indicated his team is willing to consider adding defensive help ahead of the trade deadline in order to make a run in an injury-weakened NFC East. Speaking in a Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones acknowledged that a defensive addition could bolster the squad as the front office evaluates potential moves.

Defensive Needs and Trade Talks

When asked what position could assist the Cowboys most right now, Jones stated that a pressure player could help the team. He noted that as of Friday, the organization had not seen a lot of movement in discussions leading up to Tuesday’s deadline. While communication is ongoing with other franchises, nothing was described as imminent at the time. Jones emphasized that if the right opportunity arises to improve the roster, the goal is to make a run.

The remarks follow recent comments from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who expressed satisfaction with how the current defensive unit is trending. Over the past year, Dallas has worked to reinforce a defense impacted by the absence of Micah Parsons through a combination of trades for Rashan Gary and Joey Porter Jr., signings like Jalen Thompson, and draft selections including Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence.

NFC East Outlook and Upcoming Matchup

Despite giving up the most rushing yards in the NFL this season, the Cowboys hold a 3-5 record that keeps them within striking distance in the division ahead of Week 9. They currently sit ahead of both the Washington Commanders, who hold a 2-4-1 record, and the Philadelphia Eagles at 2-6. Jones characterized the division lead held by the 4-2-1 New York Giants as a deficit that is not insurmountable if the team improves its ability to finish games.

The Dallas defense performed well in the first half of last Sunday’s overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals before struggling late in the contest. When questioned whether the result of Sunday’s upcoming road game against the Indianapolis Colts would influence the team’s trade deadline strategy, Jones maintained that the organization remains focused strictly on a day-to-day approach.

Dallas will look to rebound from last week’s defeat during Sunday’s matchup against the Colts, an opponent that has already begun parting ways with key players ahead of the trade deadline.
