Everton Come From Behind to Beat Coventry 3-1

Everton rallied from a goal down to defeat Coventry City 3-1 at home, climbing to fifth place in the Premier League table. The victory came on a milestone afternoon for manager David Moyes, who was taking charge of his 592nd match in the English top flight.

Coventry Dominates Early Before VAR Decisions

Coventry controlled much of the opening period and created several clear opportunities. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was forced into saves by Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Victor Torp, while Jack Rudoni sent a strike narrowly wide of the target.

The first half featured a controversial Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review when Everton defender James Tarkowski pulled the hair of Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi inside the penalty box. VAR ruled against awarding a penalty to Coventry, while also clearing Tarkowski of a handball claim. Early in the second half, Coventry saw another penalty claim dismissed by VAR after Taiwo Awoniyi went down following a challenge from Vitalii Mykolenko.

Barry Turnaround and Late Dewsbury-Hall Goal

Coventry earned the lead seven minutes into the second half when Yann Gboho controlled the ball under defensive pressure, turned, and prodded a shot past Pickford to score his first goal for the club. Everton answered quickly, with Thierno Barry heading in an equalizer from a deep Mykolenko cross past Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

Barry then put Everton ahead by bundling home his second goal of the match following strong work along the left flank by Tyrique George. Replays suggested the ball touched Barry’s arm before crossing the line, but VAR deemed the evidence inconclusive and permitted the goal to stand, marking Barry’s fourth goal within eight days.

Kieran Dewsbury-Hall secured the win ten minutes before the end of normal time. After previously testing Rushworth, the midfielder timed his run onto a pass from Barry and drove a powerful strike into the near post from a tight angle.

The result lifted Everton above rival Liverpool into fifth place, while Frank Lampard’s Coventry side remains near the bottom three. Everton will next face Brentford on Nov. 21, while Coventry hosts Crystal Palace on the same day.
