The coach who helped guide Jannik Sinner to five Grand Slam titles and the world number one spot is to leave the player’s camp at the end of the year. Australian Darren Cahill, 61, joined the Italian player’s team in June 2022 when Sinner sat just outside the world’s top 10 and had never advanced past a Grand Slam quarter-final.
Team Success and Upcoming Changes
Working alongside Italian coach Simone Vagnozzi, Cahill played a key role in helping Sinner claim five Slams and hold the world number one ranking for 95 weeks. An injury has sidelined the 25-year-old player since he secured his second consecutive Wimbledon title in July, allowing Alexander Zverev to surpass him at the top of the rankings. Sinner plans to make his return at the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Saudi Arabia next month, while Swedish coach Magnus Norman, who previously worked with Stan Wawrinka, will join the team for the upcoming season.
Farewell Tributes
Reflecting on the partnership, Sinner praised Cahill as an essential part of his tennis journey. He stated that together with Simone and the rest of the team, they accomplished childhood dreams, and noted that Cahill’s mentorship shaped him both as an athlete and an individual for the entirety of his career. Cahill originally intended to step down at the conclusion of 2025, but during Wimbledon he told Sinner the player could choose his future involvement provided he won the championship. Cahill described working with Jannik as a special privilege and honour.
