The 2026 Major League Baseball season concluded with the Milwaukee Brewers capturing their first World Series title in franchise history by defeating the Tampa Bay Rays. With the championship series finished, the 2026-27 offseason has officially commenced, bringing a packed schedule of key dates and deadlines. However, the upcoming months carry significant uncertainty because the current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire on December 1, and team owners are expected to implement a lockout.
October and November Key Dates
The offseason calendar begins on October 29 at 9 a.m. Eastern Time, when players with at least six service years officially become free agents and trading resumes. These free agents enter a five-day exclusive negotiating period where they can only discuss financial terms with their most recent team, while trades involving 40-man roster players open for the first time since the summer deadline.
Gold Glove winners will be announced on November 1 during an ESPN broadcast at 8:30 p.m. ET, featuring finalists from teams like the Chicago Cubs and Toronto Blue Jays. November 2 brings contract option decisions, a qualifying offer deadline of $23.15 million, and the opening of true free agency at 5 p.m. ET, where players can negotiate and sign with any organization. Major award winners, including Rookies of the Year, Managers of the Year, Cy Youngs, and MVPs, will be revealed during an MLB Network broadcast week from November 9 to 12. General managers will simultaneously gather for meetings in Las Vegas from November 10 to 12.
Later in the month, Silver Slugger recipients will be announced on November 17 alongside the deadline for players to accept or reject qualifying offers. November 17 also marks the deadline for teams to file reserve lists by adding eligible minor leaguers to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft, with a 6 p.m. ET cutoff. Concurrently, owners will hold meetings in New York from November 17 to 19 to discuss major business matters. The month wraps up on November 20 with the non-tender deadline, requiring teams to extend contract offers to pre-arbitration and arbitration-eligible players.
December Deadlines and the CBA Expiration
The collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1 at 11:59 p.m. ET, which will likely trigger a player lockout that halts all major league transactions, trades, and free agent signings. Because a lockout introduces substantial uncertainty, events scheduled after this date carry asterisks and remain subject to change. As reported by the New York Post, competitive balance draft picks for teams in the bottom ten of revenue or market size are typically assigned in early December. The Hall of Fame’s Classic Baseball Committee results for pre-1980 candidates will be announced on December 6.
The annual Winter Meetings are scheduled for December 7 to 9 in San Diego as a hub for major player movement, though they would likely face cancellation if a lockout occurs. The draft lottery to determine the top six selections of the annual amateur draft takes place on December 8, featuring odds for non-playoff clubs such as the Colorado Rockies, Kansas City Royals, and New York Mets, while revenue-sharing participants like the Giants and Pirates face eligibility restrictions. The Rule 5 Draft is slated for December 9, though only the minor-league phase would proceed during a lockout since those players are not on 40-man rosters.
January, Spring Training, and Opening Day
The arbitration filing deadline falls on January 8, requiring teams and eligible players to submit their respective salary figures. The international amateur signing period for non-40-man roster players opens on January 9 at 9 a.m. ET. The 2027 Hall of Fame class will be announced during a live MLB Network broadcast on January 19, featuring newcomers on the ballot such as Jon Lester and Buster Posey alongside returning candidates like Chase Utley.
Arbitration hearings are scheduled from late January through February for sides unable to reach financial agreements before a three-panel group decides between the submitted figures. Spring training camps across Arizona and Florida are set to open in mid-February, with all thirty teams slated to play their first exhibition game on February 19. Opening Day is scheduled for March 24 with an exclusive Opening Night game on Netflix, followed by the remaining twenty-eight clubs starting their seasons one day later.
