Wolverhampton Wanderers legend Conor Coady has retired from playing professional football at the age of 33. The former club captain earned 10 caps for England as a central defender and is already transitioning into coaching.
Early Career and Rise at Liverpool
Coady started his football journey in the academy at Liverpool in Kirkby as a promising midfielder. His tall physique and impressive performances for the reserve team drew comparisons to fellow Liverpudlian Steven Gerrard.
After making only two first-team appearances for Liverpool, Coady moved to Sheffield United on loan in 2013 before joining Huddersfield Town permanently at the end of that season. He later found his greatest success at Molineux after being repositioned as a central defender by manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Success With Wolverhampton Wanderers
Kenny Jackett initially brought Coady to Wolves in 2015, where the defender played a vital role in helping the club secure promotion back to the Premier League in 2018. He went on to captain the side to two seventh-place Premier League finishes and a run to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Coady made 317 total appearances and scored seven goals for Wolves before departing on loan to Everton in 2022. Everton chose not to exercise a permanent option, leading him to join Leicester City for a reported £8.5 million in July 2023.
Later Career and Transition to Coaching
Following his time at Leicester, Coady spent 13 months with Wrexham before an early departure led to a loan spell at Charlton Athletic under Nathan Jones last season. He did not feature this season prior to officially leaving the Racecourse Ground.
Having previously worked as a pundit for BBC Radio 5 Live, Coady has already taken up a coaching position with the England Under-21s under Lee Carsley. He also assisted Liverpool’s Under-21 set-up and has been linked with an assistant head coach role at League One club Barnsley.
