Why Jordan Love could face an NFL fine over Halloween costume

Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love could face a fine from the NFL after dressing up as a blind referee for Halloween with his wife, Ronika Stone. The costume comes shortly after tensions between the team and league officials peaked following controversial officiating calls during a recent game.

Halloween Costume and Official Reactions

Following a 20-17 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 7 that featured several disputed calls against Green Bay, safety Xavier McKinney publicly criticized the officiating and subsequently received a $25,000 fine from the NFL. Six days after that October 25 matchup, Love and Stone dressed up as blind referees, complete with walking sticks, sunglasses, and penalty flags that they threw after bumping into each other, as shown in a video shared on TikTok by Stone.

When a TikTok commenter noted that Love might face a fine for the outfit, Stone replied that they were Footlocker employees. However, the use of penalty flags made the true target of the costumes clear, especially coming less than a week after the Packers suffered from questionable officiating decisions.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was asked about the costume during a press conference and admitted he received the clip from Love and found it hilarious, though he stated he should refrain from offering further thoughts. The NFL has previously punished players for off-field comments about officials, notably fining Puka Nacua $25,000 last year for remarks made during a podcast interview.

League Tension and Potential Punishments

The league has experienced heightened friction between players and officials throughout the season, which includes two separate officials each receiving a one-game suspension following an on-field confrontation with a player. Additionally, multiple head coaches have faced heavy financial penalties for their conduct toward referees.

If the NFL decides to penalize Love for mocking officials, the minimum fine for a player criticizing game officials is set at $25,000. Meanwhile, because LaFleur praised the costume during an official team press conference, the league may also consider action against the head coach.
