The Vegas Golden Knights rallied in the third period to earn a 2-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, overcoming an offensive slump through key goals from their younger players and strong goaltending from Carter Hart.
Hart turned aside 25 shots as Detroit pushed hard during the second period, keeping Vegas within striking distance. Red Wings goaltender Daniil Tarasov held the Golden Knights scoreless through the first two periods, but Vegas managed to break through twice in the final frame to secure two points.
Young Players Drive the Comeback
After falling behind, forward Braeden Bowman leveled the contest for Vegas following a faceoff sequence. “It was a great play right off the face off from Hanny to Oly,” said Bowman following the game, as reported by Yahoo Sports. “And then [Olofsson] makes a great play to Herts, who slides it over to me, and I just kind of shot it. It went through a couple sticks and found its way in.”
With 1:42 remaining in regulation, rookie Trevor Connelly netted the game-winning goal, marking his third consecutive contest with a third-period score. Connelly described the decisive play to Yahoo Sports, stating, “I knew Jack, we were coming down with speed and kind of saw the D man overcommit. I thought if I pulled it around and got a quick shot, it might catch the goalie. Lucky shot for sure.”
Bowman praised the rookie’s recent form, noting Connelly’s speed and puck-handling abilities. “He’s unreal,” Bowman said of Connelly. “He’s doing a great job, and he’s having some fun doing it, too… Kudos to him. He’s playing unbelievable right now.”
Scoring Struggles Amid Road Success
Golden Knights head coach Ryan Craig noted that while the team started strong in the opening period, they had to stay patient after failing to generate early goal support. “I liked our first period a lot,” Craig said. “What we didn’t get was rewarded. And then I think we got away from it, because it maybe didn’t show up on the scoreboard. But like I said, we found a way to get it back and get two points.”
Despite securing victories in their last two outings and earning points in three straight, scoring has proven challenging for Vegas recently. The Golden Knights recorded 41 goals across their first 10 games of the season, but have managed just 18 goals over their past eight contests, with 10 coming at 5-on-5. During this eight-game span, they have scored more than two goals on only two occasions, one of which included two empty-netters.
The victory comes during a nine-day road trip for the Golden Knights. Hart emphasized that spending time together away from home has helped the squad build cohesion during tough stretches. “I think it was good timing for us to get on the road,” Hart said. “It’s good to kind of get together and be together on the road for 9 days. Anytime you’re on the road for stretches like that, I think it’s very important for our bonding as a group. It’s been a good trip, and we’re looking forward to keeping it going on Sunday.”
