The 2026 WTA Finals in the United States have gotten off to a rocky start following a hot mic incident on a practice court and a controversial change to pre-tournament photo traditions. Jessica Pegula was caught on a live audio feed discussing a fellow player during a session at Indian Wells.
Hot Mic Incident on Practice Court
During a Wednesday practice session at Indian Wells, Jessica Pegula was caught on a hot mic talking with coach Mark Knowles. Their conversation focused on Mirra Andreeva, who reportedly left their joint practice early. Pegula labeled her a “diva” and voiced disappointment in coach Conchita Martinez for allowing the behavior, remarks that were never intended for public broadcast.
The WTA issued an immediate statement on Thursday acknowledging that Pegula was unaware of the nearby recording equipment. The organization stated that it accepts full responsibility for omitting to notify players and their staff that the microphones, which were installed to provide fans with a livestream of practice sessions, were live on the tournament courts. The WTA offered a sincere apology for failing to properly inform the players and coaches.
Absence of the Traditional Group Photo
Following the audio mishap, the tournament drew additional scrutiny for canceling the traditional group photo. The elite season-ending event usually features a pre-tournament ritual where the top eight players pose together in formal attire for an elegant portrait. This year, the organization opted out of the group shot in favor of eight individual pictures.
Elina Svitolina could be a contributing factor to the decision, as the Ukrainian player avoids associating with Belarusian and Russian competitors due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Such a stance would complicate a compact group photograph featuring Aryna Saballenka and Mirra Andreeva. These early developments have turned the tournament into a notable talking point in California.
