Panthers Coach Praises Matthew Tkachuk’s Playmaking Skills

Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk continues to impress with his high-level playmaking talent and exceptional hockey IQ early in the NHL season. Through his first 12 games, the 28-year-old has recorded four goals and 16 points while averaging an assist per contest.

Coach Paul Maurice on Tkachuk’s Evolution

Ahead of a matchup against the Winnipeg Jets, Panthers coach Paul Maurice highlighted the qualities that make Tkachuk an elite playmaker. Maurice pointed to the forward’s exceptional brain and his ability to direct pucks into precise locations on the ice rather than merely tipping them.

According to Maurice, Tkachuk is playing better and faster than ever before. The coach noted that this offseason was the first in four years where Tkachuk was fully healthy and able to train normally, rather than spending the summer months in rehabilitation.

Playing Style and Speed Improvements

Tkachuk acknowledged his coach’s assessment, which is supported by NHL EDGE skating data showing his highest recorded speed metrics in recent years. While his overall skating numbers still sit below the 50th percentile, his tangible speed improvements have helped him create crucial separation on the ice.

Since entering the league with the Calgary Flames during the 2016-17 season as a physical net-front presence, Tkachuk’s game has expanded significantly. Following his move to Florida, the team has deployed him on the right flank during power plays, where he consistently delivers dangerous passes to set up deflections and one-timers.

The Florida Panthers will rely on Tkachuk to sustain his elite level of performance to remain competitive within the Atlantic Division.
