The San Francisco 49ers attempted to bring back wide receiver Jauan Jennings via trade, but the player decided to remain with the Minnesota Vikings.
Kyle Shanahan Discusses the Failed Trade
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Wednesday that his team explored a trade for Jennings. Before finalizing any deal, the organization contacted the wide receiver to discuss a potential reunion. According to Shanahan, they spoke via FaceTime, and while the conversation went well, Jennings ultimately expressed contentment with his current situation in Minnesota.
Shanahan stated to reporters that they maintain a strong relationship with Jennings and wanted to speak with him directly. He noted that the wide receiver expressed happiness with his current team, leading to the decision not to move forward with the trade.
NBC Sports reporter Jay Glazer initially reported Sunday that a trade agreement had been reached between the 49ers and the Vikings, pending Jennings’ approval during a conversation with Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. However, Jennings declined the move to stay in Minnesota.
Jennings’ Tenure and Current Season
Jennings originally entered the league as a 2020 draft pick for the 49ers, spending six seasons with the franchise before signing with the Vikings in May following a holdout the previous offseason. Despite his departure in free agency, Shanahan indicated there was no lingering animosity between the parties.
During his time in San Francisco, Jennings played a significant offensive role, but his production with the Vikings has been limited to six receptions for 54 yards across six appearances amid offensive struggles for Minnesota. Although the injury-depleted 49ers could have offered him immediate playing time, Jennings preferred to stay put.
Both the 49ers and the Vikings hold identical 6-1 records, having suffered their first losses of the season the previous week. Jennings and the 49ers are scheduled to face each other later this month.
