West Ham United have confirmed the appointment of former midfielder Scott Parker as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The 46-year-old replaces Nuno Espirito Santo, who was dismissed on Tuesday following a disappointing start to the Championship campaign.

Coaching Setup and Immediate Debut

First-team coaches Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville, and Billy Lepine will assist Parker in his new role. Meanwhile, his former teammate Mark Noble will work closely with him as sporting director, with the club planning further announcements regarding the backroom team in the coming days.

Parker will take charge of the team for the first time on Wednesday when West Ham travel to Cardiff City in the Championship.

Managerial Ambitions and Squad Challenges

Parker quickly emerged as the front-runner for the position following back-to-back home defeats against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. He becomes West Ham’s fourth permanent manager since David Moyes departed London Stadium in May 2024, taking over a squad sitting eighth in the table and six points behind leaders Middlesbrough.

Interim chief executive Karim Virani stated that Parker was the unanimous choice of the board due to his fantastic experience, pedigree, and deep understanding of the club and its fanbase. Largest shareholder Daniel Kretinsky and Virani shared a vision with Parker to return to the Premier League as quickly as possible.

“I’ve been in this division three times and I’ve got out of this division three times. This is a tough division, there is absolutely no denying it,” Parker told the club website.

He inherits a squad that generated about £150m in summer transfer revenue through player sales, including Mateus Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville, El Hadji Malick Diouf, James Ward-Prowse, and Freddie Potts. The club reinvested a Championship record £22m to sign midfielder Arne Engels from Celtic, added winger Edvin Austbo, and secured experienced free transfers Joel Veltman and Manor Solomon, while retaining key players like Jarrod Bowen, Tomas Soucek, and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Managerial Background and Playing History at West Ham

Parker previously guided Fulham, Bournemouth, and Burnley to promotion from the Championship, though his past top-flight spells proved challenging. He secured promotion with Fulham via the 2020 play-off final before leaving the following year after relegation, and later led Bournemouth to promotion as runners-up before departing early in the Premier League season following a 9-0 defeat at Liverpool. After a brief stint with Belgian side Club Brugge in the 2022-23 season, he replaced Bayern Munich-bound Vincent Kompany at Burnley in 2024, leading the Clarets to the Premier League with a 31-match unbeaten streak before their relegation last season.

During his playing career, Parker spent four years at West Ham after joining from Newcastle United in June 2007 for £7m. He made 129 appearances, scored 12 goals, won the club’s player of the year award three consecutive seasons, and earned the Football Writers’ Association footballer of the year award during the 2010-11 relegation campaign before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in 2011.
