Lamine Yamal gave Barcelona an early advantage against Aston Villa on Tuesday night, opening the scoring in the seventh minute of their Champions League clash at Camp Nou.
Midfield Error Leads to Opening Goal
The goal came following a costly mistake from Villa midfielder Joao Gomes, who misplaced a pass in a dangerous area. Yamal quickly seized the loose ball, drove directly toward the penalty area, and placed a low finish into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to give Hansi Flick’s side a 1-0 lead.
The early setback marked a tough start for Unai Emery’s team, who arrived in Spain having won their first three Champions League league phase matches against Club Brugge, Fenerbahce, and Viking, scoring 12 goals in that run. Barcelona entered the contest seeking a response after losing 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in their previous European outing, a game in which Yamal had also scored.
Aston Villa pushed for an immediate equalizer following the opener, with Matty Cash sending a volley narrowly wide before a shot from Joao Gomes was blocked by Joao Cancelo.
