Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured the Formula 1 world championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, making history as the sport’s youngest-ever title holder and the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953. In an exclusive interview with Motorsport.com, his father, Marco Antonelli, discussed his son’s remarkable journey, his mental resilience, and the moment he realized Kimi had the qualities of a true champion.
Coping with Pressure and Pre-Race Rituals
Reflecting on the magnitude of the achievement, Marco Antonelli admitted that it is still difficult to fully grasp the reality of a Formula 1 world title, noting that Kimi approached the decisive weekend with the same steady mentality he has always maintained. Marco explained that he shares a unique bond with his son on the starting grid, often exchanging a brief glance to help manage pre-race tension.
As a former racing driver and team principal of AKM Motorsport, Marco understands the intense psychological demands placed on a driver inside the cockpit. He noted that Kimi looks to him for support and reassurance because he knows his father truly understands the pressures of high-level competition.
A Parallel Path and Natural Resilience
Marco stated that he has made a conscious effort not to project his own unfulfilled racing ambitions onto his son, allowing Kimi to forge an independent path. He highlighted his son’s exceptional ability to look ahead and remain calm in difficult situations, contrasting it with his own more emotional approach during his racing days.
According to Marco, Kimi inherited a strong work ethic and stubborn determination, qualities reinforced by his mother, Veronica, who always encouraged him to continue his education alongside racing. Despite Kimi reaching the pinnacle of motorsport, Marco and Veronica continue to run their GT and Formula 4 teams and maintain a grounded lifestyle.
Casual Paddock Life and Motorhomes
Away from the media spotlight, the Antonelli family often stays in motorhomes parked near the circuit rather than luxury hotels, frequently hosting informal dinners for figures like Stefano Domenicali and Flavio Briatore. Marco noted that top drivers such as Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton occasionally share the same paddock parking area, leading to a relaxed and simple atmosphere away from the jet-set image of Formula 1.
Addressing the criticism Kimi faced during his debut season, Marco defended his son against harsh attacks during difficult weekends, emphasizing that Kimi’s maturity and mental strength have always allowed him to turn adverse situations around.
The Turning Point in Australia
Marco pointed to the opening round of the season in Australia as the true turning point of the championship campaign. Following a heavy crash in Free Practice 3 and with a car that lacked a proper setup, Kimi bounced back to secure a front-row start in qualifying.
As Marco told Motorsport.com, that specific moment confirmed his son’s championship potential. “Let’s say he approached that grand prix with the mentality of wanting to put things right within himself. And that’s where I saw the champion,” Marco said.
Looking ahead, Marco acknowledged that maintaining success will be even harder than reaching the top, but expressed confidence in his son’s ongoing motivation and capacity for improvement.
