Caleb Williams Wears Logo-Free Cleats to Avoid NFL Fines

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams altered his footwear approach by wearing logo-free cleats to avoid league penalties and media distractions.

Cleat Controversy and Compromise

Williams appeared at a game in matte black cleats without any visible logo. The decision came shortly after he had stated an intention to keep wearing footwear that risked fines nearing $12,000 per week for displaying an unauthorized logo.

Speaking after the game, Williams explained that he made the adjustment to prevent the situation from becoming a distraction for the team. He noted that he wanted to keep unnecessary attention to a minimum given his high media profile.

The footwear in question is manufactured by Caddix, a company that designs cleats aimed at reducing ankle and knee injuries through stud placement that limits torque. Williams lacks an endorsement deal with the brand but stated that he supports the underlying science.

League Rules and Support

The National Football League maintains an exclusive partnership with Nike, prohibiting players from displaying competing apparel brands. Williams received reported fines of $11,941 following both Week 6 and Week 7 for wearing the unauthorized footwear, though he also wore them in Weeks 1 and 2 before missing time with a hamstring injury.

While Williams is not the sole player wearing the brand, his ongoing situation has made him the most prominent user. It remains uncertain if league officials will accept the logo-free compromise.

Caddix CEO Jack Rasmussen previously offered to cover Williams’ penalties, and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco also stated to ESPN that he would pay any fines incurred by the rookie.
