Australian short-form cricket star Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international T20 cricket. The 38-year-old batter, who previously stepped away from one-day internationals in 2025, has also concluded his career with his state team.
A Difficult Farewell to Victoria
Maxwell explained on The Final Word podcast that addressing his teammates following his final match for Victoria proved unexpectedly emotional. He admitted that letting them know it was his last game for the state was more challenging than anticipated.
Reflecting on his journey, Maxwell expressed deep gratitude for representing his country. He noted that if someone had promised him such a career when he entered the Victorian change rooms around 2009, he would have accepted it immediately. He added that he hopes to inspire children to pick up the game, play differently, remain open and vulnerable, and embrace their authentic selves without hesitation.
International Records and Franchise Future
Throughout his career, Maxwell participated in the T20 World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka earlier this year. He finished his international T20 career with 130 appearances, accumulating 2,897 runs at an average of 28.97 alongside a strike rate of 154.42.
Additionally, he claimed 51 wickets, secured 62 catches, and recorded a career-high score of 145 not out against Sri Lanka in 2016. Beyond the shortest format, Maxwell represented Australia in seven Test matches and 149 one-day internationals, while enjoying a productive first-class and List A career with Victoria.
Maxwell will maintain his involvement in Twenty20 franchise cricket and is set to play for the Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League.
