USMNT striker Folarin Balogun ended his months-long scoring drought by netting his first goal since the World Cup during Monaco’s 3-1 defeat against Paris FC. The strike offers a glimmer of hope for the forward as he looks to move past a turbulent summer and limited playing time.

A Difficult Period After the World Cup

Before the weekend, Balogun’s last goal came during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at the summer World Cup. Although his performances initially positioned him among the world’s elite forwards, that tournament match also brought a red card and an ensuing controversy he wished to avoid. A potential deadline-day transfer to Everton fell through after Balogun called off the move following an improperly handled medical visit.

Monaco manager Filipe Luís has largely favored 20-year-old German youth international Paris Brunner over Balogun, restricting the American’s opportunities. Luís also left Balogun out of Monaco’s UEFA Conference League squad, confining his appearances to domestic fixtures where Brunner remains the preferred option.

Breaking the Drought Against Paris FC

During Sunday’s match, Monaco struggled offensively in the first half while Paris FC built a two-goal lead before the break. At half-time, Luís introduced Balogun in place of Brunner to try and spark a comeback. In the 66th minute, Brazilian right-back Vanderson drove down the right flank and delivered a low cross that the opposing goalkeeper failed to collect, allowing Balogun to direct the ball into the far post for his first club goal in months.

The goal recalled Balogun’s strong form from last season, where he finished fourth in Ligue 1 with 13 goals for Monaco, alongside six more in the Champions League and the Coupe de France. He also maintained his momentum at the World Cup with two goals against Paraguay and another against Bosnia.

Future Prospects and Transfer Speculation

Balogun’s background in Arsenal’s academy makes him an appealing prospect for Premier League clubs managing homegrown player quotas. Manchester United and Juventus have emerged as potential destinations as speculation grows over a possible January transfer window departure.

While a single goal in a defeat does not immediately resolve his club situation or secure regular minutes, it serves as a timely reminder of his scoring capabilities when provided with proper service. Balogun ultimately seeks regular playing time to maintain his standing for Mauricio Pochettino’s national team ahead of rising young competitors.
