Bayern Munich celebrated Harry Kane’s recent Ballon d’Or victory ahead of their Der Klassiker clash against Borussia Dortmund. The festivities quickly gave way to anxiety, however, as Dortmund secured a dramatic draw while a mounting injury crisis crippled the defending champions’ squad.

A Celebratory Mood Turns to Frustration on the Pitch

Before kick-off, the stadium scoreboard featured personalized celebrations for every Bayern player, culminating in Harry Kane holding up his golden trophy to a global audience. The England captain had already received a guard of honour from his teammates ahead of a DFB Pokal match against Magdeburg following his award win two nights prior.

Despite the celebratory atmosphere, Dortmund refused to roll over. Kane still contributed by nodding a cross across the goalmouth to set up Dayot Upamecano for his second goal in as many Bundesliga games. That effort looked like the winner until Fábio Silva struck an 89th-minute equalizer for the visitors.

In between, Kane endured uncharacteristic misfortune in front of goal. He rattled a penalty off the crossbar that could have doubled Bayern’s lead and later hit the post from point-blank range after Serhou Guirassy’s opening equalizer and Upamecano’s subsequent strike.

This match marked Kane’s fourth Klassiker appearance at the Allianz Arena, with Bayern having won only one of them. Having arrived level on points at the top of the table, Dortmund successfully departed Bavaria holding the same position, with Ruhr Nachrichten journalist Kevin Pinnow describing the result as much more than just a point.

Dortmund’s Resilience and Bayern’s Mounting Injuries

Dortmund displayed tactical flexibility by switching to a back four that surprised their hosts, alongside high-energy midfield play exemplified by Jobe Bellingham. Sporting director Ole Book praised Bellingham’s performance after the match. BVB even thought they had taken the lead in the first half through Bellingham, only for the goal to be ruled out because Carney Chukwuemeka had inadvertently stumbled into Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig while in an offside position.

While Dortmund earned their result, Bayern suffered severe setbacks that extended far beyond dropped points. Already playing without head coach Vincent Kompany—who remained hospitalized after a recent health issue, leaving assistant Aaron Danks in charge—the club lost Luis Díaz, Manuel Neuer, and Jamal Musiala before kickoff. During the match, three more forward players were added to the casualty list.

Ismael Saibari suffered ankle ligament damage in a collision with Gregor Kobel that required immediate surgery, ruling him out for at least three months. Serge Gnabry is expected to miss several weeks due to a hamstring strain, and Michael Olise went down off the ball late in the game with an apparent knee issue. Danks enters an upcoming Champions League fixture against Atlético Madrid with only two senior attackers available: Kane and 18-year-old Lennart Karl.

Around the Bundesliga

Elsewhere in the German top flight, Stuttgart rebounded from a crisis of confidence by defeating Bayer Leverkusen 4-2. Joint Champions League top scorer Ermedin Demirovic netted twice in the high-intensity encounter. RB Leipzig secured a 2-0 victory away at Schalke, bolstered by a goal and an assist from Norwegian winger Antonio Nusa, providing a boost for coach Martín Demichelis.

Meanwhile, Niclas Füllkrug continued his remarkable scoring run for Werder Bremen by netting against Hoffenheim to push his team into the top five. Füllkrug has now scored in seven consecutive Bundesliga games, matching a record set by Rudi Völler during the 1982-83 season. Goalkeeper Karl Hein praised the forward, noting the privilege of playing alongside him as the national team selection approaches.

Bayern must now navigate their upcoming fixtures with a severely depleted squad as Kane prepares to shoulder an even greater burden moving forward.
