Alpine drivers hit with penalties, Hirakawa scores on F1 debut

Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto have both received post-race penalties that dropped them out of the points and allowed Haas debutant Ryo Hirakawa to score a points finish on his Formula 1 debut at the Mexico Grand Prix.

Post-Race Penalties for Alpine Drivers

Both Alpine drivers faced post-race investigations by FIA stewards for failing to slow down under yellow flags during the race in Mexico City. In the provisional results, Colapinto finished in eighth place while his teammate Gasly took 10th.

Gasly received a stop-and-go penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under double waved yellows, which was converted into a 30-second penalty after the race. Colapinto was handed a 10-second penalty for failing to slow sufficiently under single waved yellows.

Colapinto faced the risk of the same punishment as Gasly but was cleared of wrongdoing in a double yellow sector. The FIA stewards report stated that there was sufficient doubt regarding whether the driver had enough warning to comply, meaning no breach was determined for that sector.

These decisions dropped Gasly down to 17th place in the final Mexico Grand Prix classification, while Colapinto was demoted to 15th place.

Changes in the Points Finishes

A post-race 10-second penalty for McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, stemming from a collision with Arvid Lindblad, also contributed to drivers falling out of the points-paying positions.

Liam Lawson moved up to seventh place, which was originally held by Piastri. Meanwhile, Audi competitor Gabriel Bortoleto jumped from outside the points entirely into eighth place.

Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar similarly advanced from 12th to ninth place, and F1 debutant Hirakawa secured the final points position in 10th for Haas.

Hirakawa entered the weekend as a late replacement for the American squad after the team benched Esteban Ocon for unspecified reasons on Friday night, opening the door for the Japanese driver to make his first F1 race appearance.
