Penalty Drops Oscar Piastri Out of F1 Mexico GP Points

Oscar Piastri endured a difficult Mexico Grand Prix weekend that ended without points after the McLaren Formula 1 driver received a penalty for colliding with Arvid Lindblad. The setback followed a tough qualifying session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, where Piastri’s streak of 60 consecutive Q3 appearances came to an end as he qualified in 12th place.

Race Recovery and Collision with Lindblad

Piastri advanced three positions at the start and subsequently overtook Franco Colapinto and Lindblad to claim seventh place. The Australian driver held a 13-second lead over the rookie before Valtteri Bottas crashed out, triggering a safety car and a standing start that erased his advantage. Lindblad managed to move ahead when the lights went out.

Following a 12-lap battle, Piastri attempted an attack around the outside at Turn 1 and took the inside line for Turn 2. He failed to back off early enough and made contact with the rear-left wheel of the Racing Bulls machine with his front-right, sending Lindblad into the wall.

According to Motorsport.com, Piastri explained that he initially tried to go up the inside before his rival closed the door very late. He stated that he had to take avoiding action on the outside and was pushed wide to the point where he could not move any further left, resulting in interlocked wheels.

When asked if he was far enough alongside to deserve racing room under driving guidelines, Piastri mentioned he was very close to alongside because he was avoiding an initial crash. He added that when the contact happened, both cars were traveling straight while he was trying to concede the position and was already off the track.

As reported by Motorsport.com, Lindblad declined to comment on the specifics of the incident without watching a replay, but made his stance clear. He noted that he was fast, engaged in a genuine race after keeping his rival stuck behind him for over 10 laps, and was committed to fighting for the position rather than letting him easily drive around the outside.

Stewards’ Verdict and Car Damage

The FIA stewards reviewed the incident and handed Piastri a 10-second penalty, which demoted him from seventh place to outside the points.

The stewards stated in their report that Piastri attempted an overtake on the outside of Car 41 approaching Turn 1, but was never fully alongside to claim the right to the corner. The report noted that the driver of Car 41 defended his position through Turn 1 by releasing the brakes without forcing the McLaren off the track. The stewards concluded that the collision was avoidable if Piastri had moved further to the left after Turn 1, even if it meant leaving the track before Turn 2.

Having navigated a challenging season, Piastri faced further difficulty nursing a damaged car to the finish line. He mentioned that he could sense significant damage from his race engineer Tom Stallard’s voice, which was confirmed upon inspecting the vehicle afterward. Despite the hard work required, he believed the car had enough pace to hold on comfortably, though the final 10 laps proved difficult.
