The 2026-27 college basketball season begins Sunday when Villanova plays Notre Dame at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, Italy. The season starts a day earlier than usual after the NCAA granted special clearance for the teams to meet in this opening showdown.

Historic International Matchup

According to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, who first reported on the game earlier this calendar year, the matchup has been months in the making. The NCAA quietly approved a waiver in January to grant the teams a one-day head start due to the historic precedent of the game. Immediately after the men’s contest, the Notre Dame women’s team will also face Villanova.

Both Villanova and Notre Dame are prominent private Catholic schools with ties to Pope Leo XIV. Robert Francis Prevost graduated from Villanova in 1977, while Notre Dame is recognized as a leading global Catholic institution of higher learning and maintains an outpost in Rome.

While this event is historic for men’s college basketball, international season openers are more established on the women’s side. Duke opened last season against Baylor in Paris, and top-ranked South Carolina is scheduled to play No. 20 Maryland on November 2 at the Adidas Arena in Paris, following a 2023 season-opening matchup between South Carolina and Notre Dame in the French capital.

Game Details and Team Context

The game marks the first-ever men’s college basketball season opener on foreign soil and the first regular-season Division I basketball game played in Italy. The venue, the Palazzetto dello Sport, was built in the 1950s and seats roughly 3,500 spectators for basketball.

The arena is situated about 30 minutes away from the Pope’s residence in Vatican City. On Saturday, the Pope held a private audience inside the Paul VI audience hall at the Vatican for all four participating teams and their traveling fans, drawing an expected attendance of approximately 7,000 people.

Notre Dame enters the new season facing a rebuilding phase after losing its three leading scorers from last season—Markus Burton, Jalen Haralson, and Cole Certa—to the transfer portal. Entering the fourth year of his tenure, head coach Micah Shrewsberry faces pressure to avoid the program’s longest NCAA Tournament drought since the 1990s, with a victory against a Villanova squad that won 24 games last season offering a vital early boost.

Viewing Information and Outlook

The game is scheduled for Sunday, November 1, at 9:30 a.m. ET at the Palazzo dello Sport in Rome, Italy. Broadcast coverage will air on Fox, with live streaming available on fubo.

Despite losing star point guard Acaden Lewis to the transfer portal, Villanova boasts a strong roster entering the new campaign, featuring standout guard Tyler Perkins. Additionally, 7-foot-3 freshman big man Luigi Suigo—dubbed the “Italian Wemby”—will play in his home country and is viewed as a prospect for the 2027 NBA Draft. Given Notre Dame’s roster uncertainty, Villanova is favored on the neutral floor, with predictions pointing to a close contest before Villanova pulls away late to cover the 7.5-point spread.
