Kaipo Olsen-Baker Named Women’s Player of the Year

New Zealand number eight Kaipo Olsen-Baker has been named World Rugby Women’s Player of the Year.

Award Recognition for New Zealand Stars

The 24-year-old, known as a powerful ball carrier, triumphed over Canada’s DaLeaka Menin and the English duo of Megan Jones and Zoe Harrison for the accolade. Olsen-Baker delivered standout performances for a resurgent Black Ferns squad that experienced only a single defeat in 2026 under new head coach Whitney Hansen, falling 26-19 to England in September. Last year’s award went to Canada lock Sophie de Goede, while England full-back Ellie Kildunne claimed the honor in 2024.

Additionally, New Zealand flanker Elinor-Plum King received World Rugby’s Breakthrough Player of the Year award. The 22-year-old crossed the try line three times in Test matches during her debut season with the Black Ferns.

Reactions from World Rugby

World Rugby chair Brett Robinson praised the impact of both athletes during the international calendar. “Kaipo’s consistency and influence have been outstanding throughout 2026, while Elinor-Plum has made a remarkable impression in her first year on the international stage,” Robinson stated.

Robinson noted that having both competitors acknowledged in front of their home fans in Christchurch added a special significance to the event.
