Undefeated welterweight contender Michael Morales faces a demanding weight cut as he begins training for his upcoming interim championship bout at UFC 336. The 27-year-old fighter is set to square off against Carlos Prates in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on Jan. 30.
Significant Weight Cut Ahead of Interim Title Clash
Morales recently disclosed on social media that his scale currently reads 220 pounds, a frame heavy enough to qualify for the heavyweight division. Standing roughly three months away from fight night, he will need to shed 50 pounds to reach the 170-pound welterweight limit.
The Ecuadorian athlete is known for carrying immense size outside competition, frequently surpassing 200 pounds between training camps. While he typically manages the drop back down to welterweight, his current starting point gives him a substantial physical hurdle throughout his upcoming camp.
Championship Stakes in Toronto
The matchup between Morales and Prates will serve as the co-main event at UFC 336. Morales brings an unblemished 7-0 promotional record into the cage, looking to capture interim gold and secure a future unification bout against reigning division champion Islam Makhachev later next year.
