Aston Villa to Take Legal Action Against Jamie Carragher

Aston Villa has announced plans to initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher following what the club described as unacceptable insults directed at the team and its supporters.

The Premier League club released a statement on Friday evening via X, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, responding to remarks made by the former Liverpool defender and television pundit.

“Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the club and its fans,” the statement read, adding that the club will not allow anyone to hinder its progress in English and European football.

Comments on the Stick to Football Podcast

Carragher made the controversial comments while appearing on the Stick to Football podcast, where he discussed the possibility of Aston Villa manager Unai Emery taking over at Old Trafford. During the discussion, the 48-year-old pundit argued that a strict hierarchy exists within professional football.

“Aston Villa will never be Man United,” Carragher said on the podcast, explaining that clubs operate within a distinct chain. He noted that Real Madrid can attract Manchester United’s top players, just as elite clubs sit above others, and that teams positioned below Aston Villa frequently lose their managers or players to the Birmingham-based club.

Following backlash from supporters over his suggestions, Carragher told Villa fans to “shut the fuck up” before reiterating his view that the club does not match the stature of Manchester United.

The club’s legal proceedings will move forward following the chairman’s statement.
