Daniel Ricciardo Says Kimi Antonelli’s Youth is a Superpower

Daniel Ricciardo believes that Kimi Antonelli’s young age and innocence are the driving forces behind his success in the Formula 1 season. The Mercedes driver stands on the brink of securing his maiden world title heading into the Mexican Grand Prix.

Antonelli’s Path to Record-Breaking Success

The 20-year-old has secured nine victories during his sophomore campaign. To claim the championship on Sunday, Antonelli only needs to finish in ninth place, or ensure that neither George Russell nor Lewis Hamilton wins the race. Achieving this feat would make him the youngest-ever Formula 1 champion, eclipsing Sebastian Vettel’s existing record by more than three years.

Ricciardo on the Advantage of Youth

Ricciardo, who entered Formula 1 at age 22 and concluded his career at 35, stated on the Beyond The Grid podcast that youth provides a distinct advantage. As reported by Autosport.com, the Australian explained that being young means a driver lacks extensive exposure to the intense pressures of the world. Ricciardo drew parallels to his own breakthrough 2014 season with Red Bull Racing following Mark Webber’s retirement, where he outperformed reigning four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel and secured three victories.

Ricciardo noted that Antonelli currently occupies a sweet spot where immense talent and speed combine with a complete absence of accumulated career baggage. He contrasted this effortless mindset with his own later years in the sport, during which difficult career choices and a lack of anticipated success created mental hurdles that required much deeper effort to overcome.

Following his victory at the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli stated his intention to retain his current approach for the remainder of the season. He emphasized that he wants to maintain the same mindset, focus on having fun, and continue fighting for victories to finish the year on a high note.
