Remembering Sir Patrick Stewart’s Iconic F1 Podium Shoey

Renowned actor Sir Patrick Stewart cemented his legacy among Formula 1 fans during the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. The legendary film star delivered an unforgettable podium interview that culminated in him drinking champagne directly from Daniel Ricciardo’s race boot.

A Legendary Podium Moment in Montreal

Lewis Hamilton won the Montreal race, standing alongside his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, while Ricciardo finished in third place for Red Bull. Sir Patrick kicked off the post-race interviews with a theatrical opening before turning his attention to the Australian driver, who was known for his signature podium celebration known as the shoey.

Ricciardo downed champagne from his own race boot before handing it to the actor. Without hesitation, the then-76-year-old drank from the footwear to massive cheers from the crowd below, declaring it a good vintage.

Lewis Hamilton voiced his astonishment at the sight, questioning whether the actor realized how sweaty his teammate’s feet were. Sir Patrick delivered a response that quickly went viral across the internet, stating he did not care because he was on the podium for the first time and would drink out of anybody’s shoe.

Continuing the Celebrations

The lighthearted exchange continued when the actor asked Hamilton about leading every lap from pole position. Hamilton responded by asking if the star could read his mind, to which the actor replied that he was happy before hyping up the Canadian crowd.

Sky Sports noted at the time that he became the first knight of the realm to perform a shoey at the Canadian Grand Prix. Daniel Ricciardo completed several more shoeys throughout his career before departing Formula 1 in 2024, but the shared moment with the legendary actor remains a standout memory in the sport’s history.
