Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Dustin May will enter free agency after declining his mutual option for the 2027 Major League Baseball season, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post on Thursday. The mutual option was valued at $20 million according to Spotrac.
World Series Triumph and 2026 Season Journey
This decision arrives just one day after the Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in a five-game series to secure the 2026 World Series, marking the first championship in franchise history. May began the 2026 campaign playing for the St. Louis Cardinals before moving to Milwaukee in an August 3 trade.
In that transaction, the Brewers acquired May alongside left-handed relief pitcher JoJo Romero from St. Louis. In return, the Cardinals received minor league outfielders Alexander Frías and Josiah Ragsdale.
Pitching Performance Statistics
Before the trade, the 29-year-old pitcher made 21 starts for the Cardinals, accumulating a 7-9 record, a 4.38 ERA, and a 1.284 WHIP while collecting 106 strikeouts and 35 walks across 109 innings. His performance shifted after joining Milwaukee, where he registered a 5.65 ERA over 10 starts, and opposing hitters managed a .796 OPS against him.
Throughout the Brewers’ postseason run, the team deployed him primarily out of the bullpen. In that relief role, he surrendered 11 hits and seven earned runs across 11 innings on the mound.
Clubs interested in acquiring May during free agency will look for him to rebound from his 2026 difficulties, having maintained a 3.86 career ERA before the start of the season.
