The MLB offseason has officially begun following the conclusion of the World Series, where the Milwaukee Brewers claimed the championship. With the campaign wrapped up, multiple players from National League West contenders—the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants—have reached the open market.
Dodgers Roster Adjusts After Postseason Exit
The Los Angeles Dodgers saw nine players enter free agency on Thursday morning following their postseason run. The list of departing pitching talent features starters Tarik Skubal, Kris Bubic, and Eric Lauer, along with relief pitchers Alex Vesia, Evan Phillips, Blake Treinen, and Brusdar Graterol.
On the position side, utilityman Kiké Hernandez and infielder Miguel Rojas became free agents. Although listed on the market, Rojas formally announced his retirement after the Dodgers were knocked out during the National League Championship Series.
Padres Manage Free Agents and Contract Options
The San Diego Padres, who also faced Milwaukee during their postseason run, lost nine players to free agency. Starting pitchers Walker Buehler, Robbie Ray, and Casey Mize entered the market alongside relievers Adrian Morejon and Jason Adam. The outgoing position players consist of first baseman Ty France, utility player Luis Rengifo, and outfielders Ramon Laureano and Austin Hays.
Beyond standard free agency, San Diego must resolve several contract options before Monday, Nov. 2. Pitcher Michael King elected to opt out of his $28 million deal for 2027 in aim of securing a longer contract. Relief pitchers Yuki Matsui and Wandy Peralta also retain player options for next season.
Regarding team options for 2027, San Diego holds choices on starting pitcher Nick Pivetta and reliever Kyle Hart. The Padres are expected to work out a new contract with Pivetta, who has a $14 million option for the coming year. Additionally, mutual options involving infielder Miguel Andujar as well as starters Griffin Canning and Lucas Giolito are expected to be declined by the upcoming deadline.
Giants Enter Offseason With Minimal Turnover
Compared to their division rivals, the San Francisco Giants enter the winter with very few immediate departures. Relief pitcher JT Brubaker was the only player on the Giants roster to hit free agency at the start of the offseason.
