Ireland prop Tadhg Furlong has been cleared by a disciplinary committee of grabbing Munster player Gavin Coombes in the groin during a United Rugby Championship fixture. The incident took place during Leinster’s 24-18 victory over Munster at the Aviva Stadium.
The Disciplinary Hearing and Decision
During the first half of the match, Munster back row Coombes raised the allegation with referee Andrew Brace. Although television match official Colin Stanley was unable to find conclusive video evidence at the time, Furlong was subsequently cited for an act of foul play under Law 9.27. This law states that players must not engage in actions against the spirit of good sportsmanship, specifically including grabbing, twisting, or squeezing the genitals.
The disciplinary panel consisting of Simon Thomas from Wales, Attie Heyns from South Africa, and Pamela Woodman from Scotland convened on Thursday. According to the committee, they unanimously concluded that the citing complaint against the player should be dismissed on the basis that he did not commit an act of foul play contrary to Law 9.27.
Despite dismissing the complaint, the disciplinary committee stated that Coombes provided an honest account of his recollection regarding the events surrounding the incident.
Having avoided any sanction, the 33-year-old Furlong remains available for selection as Ireland prepares for upcoming Nations Championship home matches against Argentina, Fiji, and South Africa, alongside the finals weekend fixture at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.
