Liverpool Beat Chelsea on Penalties to Reach Carabao Cup Last Eight

Liverpool advanced to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after defeating Chelsea on penalties following a dramatic encounter at Anfield. Wesley Fofana missed the decisive spot-kick by sending his effort high over the crossbar.

Familiar Shootout Misery for Chelsea

The penalty defeat added another chapter to Chelsea’s history of shootout losses against Liverpool, following previous setbacks in the 2007 Champions League semi-final, the 2019 Uefa Super Cup final, and both domestic cup finals in 2022. Emmanuel Emegha had a chance to win the tie for Chelsea in sudden death, but his attempt was saved by Giorgi Mamardashvili. Liverpool also missed opportunities to seal victory during the shootout as Kostas Tsimikas, Ryan Gravenberch, and Valentin Barco failed to convert.

Joe Gomez ultimately edged Liverpool ahead by scoring his first-ever penalty for the club into the top corner. After Morgan Rogers and Cody Gakpo had traded penalties during normal time, Fofana’s miss ended the contest. The result marked another difficult moment for Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso following a home defeat against Tottenham.

Xabi Alonso said: “For sure it is not the outcome we wanted or expected but once you go to penalties there has to be a sad side. We played with courage, the game was close with not many chances for both sides. It is a small setback because it is probably the least important competition for us. As soon as we leave Anfield our focus will be on a very important game on Saturday.”

Normal Time Action and Penalties

Chelsea started with Danny Welbeck in attack and Jordan Henderson in midfield while Estêvão remained on the bench. The breakthrough came when Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moisés Caicedo inside the penalty area, allowing Morgan Rogers to convert the spot-kick past Mamardashvili. Liverpool equalised shortly after when the ball struck Fofana’s raised hand following a corner, and Cody Gakpo scored comfortably from the penalty spot.

Both goalkeepers were called into action during regulation time, with Mike Penders making crucial saves to deny a header from Ronald Araújo and a deflected shot from Bradley Barcola. At the other end, Mamardashvili produced important stops, including a low save to deny Marco Palestra late in the game.

Andoni Iraola said: “I’m pleased for the players because they put in a big effort tonight. I can feel togetherness within the squad and I’m happy to feel it because it is very important. The players are feeling support from the crowd and now we have another big one on Sunday so let’s try to finish this four in a row in the best way.”
