Liverpool advanced to the quarter-finals of the cup competition after securing a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Chelsea following a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Both teams fielded much-changed starting line-ups in a cagey encounter that ultimately required sudden death penalties to separate the two sides.
First-Half Penalties Break the Deadlock
The match at Anfield lacked quality in the early stages, with neither side registering a shot on goal until the 22nd minute. As 101 Great Goals reported, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 39th minute when Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch brought down Moises Caicedo inside the penalty area. Morgan Rogers stepped up to take the spot-kick and confidently sent goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili the wrong way to give Chelsea the lead.
The visitors’ advantage lasted only a few minutes before Liverpool responded immediately. Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana handled the ball from a corner kick, conceding a penalty at the other end. Cody Gakpo converted calmly from the spot in the 43rd minute to equalize, leaving the score level at 1-1 at halftime after Gakpo tested Filip Penders with a curling effort and Chelsea lost Maxence Lacroix to a hamstring injury.
Chances Squandered After the Break
The second half saw both teams waste opportunities to secure the win within the regulation 90 minutes. Rogers squandered a golden chance after breaking through on goal with a heavy touch, while Pedro Neto and Ronald Araujo both forced saves from the respective goalkeepers. Liverpool brought on Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola in the 58th minute to inject fresh momentum into the attack.
As the game began to open up in the closing stages, Barcola unleashed a fierce 20-yard drive that required a sharp low save from Penders. Both Marco Pelestra and Rogers went close for Chelsea in the final 15 minutes, while Wirtz missed a clear opportunity from 10 yards out after Gakpo unselfishly headed the ball down. With neither side able to find a winning goal during regular time, the match progressed straight to a penalty shootout.
Sudden Death Drama Seals Victory
The shootout began with three successful penalties from both teams before Valentin Barco hit the post for Chelsea’s fourth attempt. Kostas Tsimikas missed his opportunity to win it for Liverpool by blazing his shot over the crossbar, allowing Jordan Henderson to level during his return to Anfield and push the contest into sudden death.
Both Gravenberch and debutant Emmanuel Emegha missed their respective sudden death kicks before Joe Gomez successfully converted his penalty to place the pressure squarely back on the visitors. Fofana ultimately blazed his spot-kick over the bar, sealing the victory and progression for the hosts.
Liverpool’s upcoming schedule features a Premier League match against Arsenal on November 1, 2026, followed by a UEFA Champions League fixture away to Fenerbahçe on November 4. Chelsea will return to Premier League action by hosting Manchester United on October 31, 2026.
