Brewers Prepare for Tropicana Field’s Baseball-Colored Roof

Ahead of Game 3 of the World Series in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Milwaukee Brewers prepared for Tropicana Field’s unique challenges by setting up a pitching machine at home plate to launch balls toward the roof.

Adapting to a Unique Dome Environment

The stadium dome features a translucent structure supported by numerous spokes, complete with four concentric rings holding lights, speakers, and a catwalk. Because the outermost rings hang roughly above the warning track, any of them could cause an unusual bounce. Compounding the challenge, the roof shares a similar color with a baseball, creating a confusing visual background.

Manager Pat Murphy addressed the conditions hours before the October 26 matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, noting the unique elements players must navigate. “It could be a factor,” Murphy stated, comparing the venue to other ballparks with specific quirks like Wrigley Field’s wall, basket, and small foul territory.

“Here you’ve got to deal with foul territory; the [bullpen] mounds are on the field. You’ve got to deal with a different color background, different color ceiling, catwalks,” Murphy added. He expressed confidence in his team’s ability to handle the environment, noting that while the adjustments are difficult, practicing for them was necessary.

Familiarity and Past Experience at the Trop

The Brewers entered the contest having played 14 previous games at the venue, though none since 2023. The facility’s roof was rebuilt following Hurricane Milton during the 2024-2025 offseason, though its design remains largely similar to the original structure.

First baseman Jake Bauers, who played his rookie major league season with the Rays in 2018 across fewer than 50 games at first base and the outfield, shared his perspective on tracking balls under the dome. “It never got easier for me when I was playing home games here, but I think it goes to as long as you don’t take your eye off of it, you’re going to be all right,” he explained, as reported by sports.yahoo.com.
