Toprak Razgatlioglu has admitted he is facing a challenging period after a shoulder injury forced him to cut his debut MotoGP season short and undergo surgery. The Turkish rider missed the Australian Grand Prix and will sit out the remainder of the campaign, including a crucial Valencia test on 1 December that will mark the first full outing for machines built under the new 2027 regulations.
Injury and Early Season Struggles
The trouble began during the second free practice session at the Indonesian Grand Prix, where Razgatlioglu suffered a severe dislocation of his right shoulder in a crash. Medical staff managed to pop the joint back into place, allowing him to participate in qualifying and take his place on the grid for Sunday’s race. Nevertheless, intense pain ultimately forced him to retire from the Mandalika event.
Pramac subsequently confirmed that the rider needed a surgical procedure to ensure a complete recovery. The goal is for him to reach full fitness ahead of the opening 2027 pre-season test scheduled for 31 January in Sepang.
Hospital Recovery and Reflection
Ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend, Razgatlioglu posted images on social media from his hospital bed in Milan following the operation. He expressed his disappointment at watching the championship unfold from afar on television, noting that this is a totally unfamiliar experience for him.
“Sometimes unexpected things can happen. I am going through a difficult time because, for the first time in my sporting career, I have had to end a season before it is over,” Razgatlioglu states in his post.
“Watching the races on television is a very strange feeling. I had shoulder surgery so that I could come back stronger, and I have already started training. I hope we’ll be back on the motorcycle as soon as possible.”
He also expressed gratitude to his supporters and team, adding, “Many thanks to the Yamaha family, my team and the doctor. I would also like to thank all of you who supported me and didn’t leave me alone with your good wishes.”
Future Outlook with Yamaha and Pramac
Razgatlioglu stepped up to MotoGP this year at the age of 29 after securing three WorldSBK titles in 2021, 2024, and 2025. His maiden campaign in the premier class proved difficult, as limitations with the Yamaha motorcycle hindered his ability to fight for higher positions.
Looking ahead, Razgatlioglu is set to stay with the Pramac squad for next season. He remains tied to Yamaha through a contract that runs until the end of 2028, though the agreement includes an exit clause exercisable at the conclusion of the upcoming season.
