Lorenzo Musetti eyes top 10 return after first ATP title win

Lorenzo Musetti has ended a four-year title drought by capturing the ATP 250 championship in Lyon. The Italian player triumphed over Taylor Fritz in the final, capping off a strong week that included hard-fought victories against Flavio Cobolli and Luca Van Assche, as reported by sports.yahoo.com based on La Gazetta dello Sport.

Overcoming Injuries and Chasing Goals

Musetti experienced the best season of his career in 2025, which propelled him to a career-high ranking of world number five in January. He started 2026 strongly by reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals, where he held a two-set lead over Novak Djokovic before sustaining a right leg injury. Subsequent physical setbacks forced him to miss both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Despite previously dropping seven consecutive finals following his initial two titles in 2022, Musetti remains ranked world number 26. Following his recent success in Lyon, he outlined his ambition to climb back into the upper echelon of men’s tennis.

Speaking to La Gazetta dello Sport, Musetti stated, “I want to enjoy the end of the season by trying to play as many matches as possible, to rediscover what I’ve been missing this season; consistency in matches, my level, and feeling good physically.”

He added, “I want to have this attitude in the coming weeks too, because it’s what helps me win matches, beat important players, and get out of tough situations. This is definitely the biggest difference between top players and those in a lower ranking, that fine line that can change a match.”

Regarding his team setup, Musetti confirmed he will maintain his current structure, noting, “As for the team, this is it and this will be it. It’s my decision, and I’ll continue like this. I can’t wait to finish this season and then try to regain my ranking a bit. I don’t want to give numbers, but trying to get back into the top 10 is definitely a dream I think I have to chase.”

Upcoming Tournaments and Rankings Defence

The 24-year-old faces a busy schedule to close out the 2026 season, with 375 ranking points to defend following his qualification for the ATP Finals last year. His penultimate tournament will take place at the Vienna Open, where he reached the semi-finals in the previous season.

Musetti faces a challenging opening match in the Austrian capital against sixth seed Frances Tiafoe, marking their eighth career meeting with Tiafoe holding a 4-3 advantage in their head-to-head record.

The projected draw for Musetti in Vienna features potential matchups in the subsequent rounds:

  • First Round: Frances Tiafoe (6)
  • Second Round: Arthur Fery/Jacob Fearnley
  • Quarter-final: Alexander Zverev (1)/Brandon Nakashima
  • Semi-final: Flavio Cobolli (4)/Alex de Minaur (5)
  • Final: Carlos Alcaraz (2)/Daniil Medvedev (3)

Following the Vienna Open, Musetti will compete at the Paris Masters to conclude his 2026 campaign. While closing the gap on the top 10 immediately may prove difficult, missing numerous tournaments earlier in the year means he will have additional opportunities to accumulate ranking points throughout 2027.
