Why Alex Eala faces a major upset risk in Hong Kong Open

Alexandra Eala advanced past Emerson Jones on Tuesday at the Hong Kong Open. The second-seeded star labored through a tough battle against the Australian youngster before securing a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the opening round.

The Challenge of Tereza Valentova

Although Eala enters the tournament as one of the primary favorites, sports.yahoo.com points out that she faces a serious risk of an upset in her upcoming second-round match. Eala is scheduled to face Czech youngster Tereza Valentova next.

On paper, the matchup might appear straightforward since Valentova holds the 85th ranking on the WTA Tour and is still developing her full potential. However, historical context reveals a concerning trend for the Filipino player. Eala has never managed to beat Valentova in professional competition, suffering defeats at both the 2025 Japan Open and the 2026 Qatar Open without winning a single set.

During the 2025 Osaka Open round of 32, Valentova defeated Eala 6-1, 6-2. She followed that up with a 7-6, 6-1 win in the round of 64 at the 2026 Qatar Open. With Valentova proving to be a difficult opponent in the past, the upcoming Thursday clash poses a significant threat to Eala’s tournament run.

Potential Quarter-Final Opponents and Tournament Context

The victor of the match between Eala and Valentova will advance to face either Xinyu Wang, Alina Charaeva, or Antonia Ruzic in the quarter-finals. Wang secured her spot in the second round on Monday after beating Adithya Karunaratne, while Ruzic and Charaeva are scheduled to play their opening match on Wednesday.

Whoever reaches the semi-finals will likely collide with either fourth seed Maria Sakkari or fifth seed Talia Gibson. Meanwhile, last year’s champion Victoria Mboko is absent from the tournament this year as she continues her recovery from an injury sustained at the Queen’s Club Championships in June.
