Max Verstappen qualified fourth for the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix but received a one-place grid drop, moving him to the third row following a practice collision with Liam Lawson. The incident between the two drivers from the Red Bull stable during the second free practice session initially prompted sharp criticism from the world champion before both cleared the air.
The Grid Penalty and Stewards’ Decision
Following the session, Verstappen openly expressed frustration in the media pen, stating that he had no idea what Lawson was thinking and questioned the wisdom of such behavior from a driver still fighting for a seat. Although the clash initially seemed destined for minor consequences, the FIA stewards handed down a grid penalty. The stewards noted in their official document that while such an incident would normally trigger only a warning, they chose to set an example to halt similar practice clashes, referencing a prior discussion in the team managers’ meeting.
Speaking to Autosport and other media in the paddock, Verstappen accepted the decision without surprise. He noted that authorities have used him and others to set examples in the past, adding that there is nothing to be done about the ruling. When asked if he felt personally singled out by the stewards, the Dutch driver chose not to elaborate further.
Clearing the Air and the 2027 Seat Debate
Lawson approached Verstappen on Saturday morning to apologize for the collision. As reported by Autosport, the New Zealander acknowledged that the incident should never happen during practice and stated that he never intended to make contact. Lawson added that he understood Verstappen’s heated reaction on Friday, attributing it to the post-session adrenaline.
During his own media session, Verstappen declined to publicly endorse either Lawson or Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov for the 2027 Racing Bulls seat. While acknowledging the challenge of managing multiple talented drivers within the program, he stated that the final decision rests entirely with the team and kept his personal opinion to himself. Meanwhile, Lawson confirmed that his future on the grid remains undecided as he focuses on performing in every race.
