Surrey head coach Gareth Batty has stepped down from his position to take up a role as an assistant coach with Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings.
A Historic Coaching Tenure
During his first three seasons in charge, Batty led Surrey to three consecutive County Championship titles, achieving a feat not accomplished by any team in nearly 60 years. He also twice guided the club to T20 Finals Day after taking over as head coach in 2022. Speaking to the club website, Batty expressed gratitude for his time at the club, stating that expressing thanks hardly felt sufficient for everything Surrey meant to him, while adding that the new journey was exciting for his family.
A Long Association with Surrey
Batty’s departure concludes a 21-year relationship with the club. His playing career featured two spells at Surrey, beginning with his arrival from Yorkshire in 1998 until 2001, followed by seven seasons at Worcestershire before his return to The Oval in 2010. He served as club captain from 2015 to 2017, accumulated more than 350 appearances, and claimed over 500 wickets across all formats. Having represented England in nine Test matches, he retired from playing in 2021 and transitioned directly into the coaching staff.
Surrey director of cricket Alec Stewart remarked that finding the words to describe Batty’s contribution as both a player and head coach was difficult. Stewart noted that he had known and worked with Batty for many years, during which time the coach demonstrated exceptional commitment to the organization. While expressing disappointment at his departure, Stewart acknowledged that the opportunity was too good to miss and would allow Batty to spend additional time with his family outside of the IPL season.
