Spanish Cup Matches Suspended After Madrid Train Crash

All 24 matches in the Spanish Copa del Rey scheduled for Wednesday have been suspended to honor the victims after at least 68 people died in a train crash near Madrid. Over 500 passengers were on board the trains when they collided and derailed in Toledo.

Suspension and Affected Teams

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the decision in a statement, noting that the postponements were made in solidarity with the victims. Five top-flight clubs—Levante, Alaves, Valencia, Celta Vigo, and Real Betis—were scheduled to play their first-round fixtures on Wednesday. Major clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid are not scheduled to enter the tournament until the last 32 stage.

Tributes and Condolences

Prior to their Women’s Champions League fixture against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, Real Madrid observed a minute of silence while players wore black armbands. On their website, Real Madrid offered “full support” to the emergency services, stating, “Real Madrid C. F. wishes to express its deepest sorrow over the tragic railway accident that occurred in the province of Toledo.”

Barcelona shared their sympathy online, with the club stating: “FC Barcelona expresses its deepest condolences to the victims of the serious railway accident between Los Yebenes and Urda (Toledo).” The statement added that the club conveys support and solidarity to the families and friends of the victims and wishes the injured a rapid recovery.

Tennis player Carlos Alcaraz also shared his sympathies regarding the tragedy. “All my love and support to the families of the victims and to all the people affected during these such difficult times,” the seven-time major winner said on X.

Thursday’s fixtures remain scheduled as planned, and the RFEF has not yet announced a revised date for the postponed Wednesday matches.
