The New Orleans Saints and the Cleveland Browns are locked in a defensive battle, heading into halftime tied 3-3 after struggling to generate sustained offense.

Kickers Account for All First-Half Scoring

All points on the board came from the foot of each team’s kicker. New Orleans kicker Charlie Smyth opened the scoring by converting a 30-yard field goal midway through the first quarter.

Andre Szmyt responded for Cleveland early in the second quarter, successfully kicking a 41-yard field goal to tie the game.

Missed Opportunities and Penalties Define First Half

Both squads squandered major scoring opportunities deep in opponent territory without finding the end zone. Saints rookie receiver Jordyn Tyson fumbled the ball on his very first career reception, allowing the Browns to recover inside the 10-yard line.

Later in the second quarter, the Saints executed a crucial goal-line stand, stopping the Browns on a fourth-and-goal rushing attempt from the 1-yard line.

The Browns managed only 80 yards of total offense during the first two quarters. Notably, Cleveland committed seven penalties, which outweighed their total of five first downs.

Meanwhile, New Orleans accumulated 176 total yards and recorded eight first downs while going 1-of-4 on third-down conversions.

Quarterback Performances

Starting in place of Deshaun Watson—who spent the week in concussion protocol—Shedeur Sanders completed 5-of-8 passes for 38 yards for the Browns.

For the Saints, Tyler Shough completed 7-of-10 pass attempts for 135 yards.

The Saints are scheduled to receive the kickoff to begin the second half.
