Following their Week 8 victory over the Carolina Panthers, the Green Bay Packers implemented several notable roster adjustments and playing-time shifts across multiple units. The game featured an increased workload for running back Josh Jacobs, line reconfigurations, and injury-driven personnel changes in both the receiving corps and tight end room.
Offensive Workload Shifts and Injury Updates
Josh Jacobs established himself as the clear focal point of Green Bay’s backfield, logging 47 snaps—accounting for 70 percent of the team’s offensive plays. That marked a significant increase from the previous week, when he played 35 snaps (52 percent). Backup running backs MarShawn Lloyd and Pierre Strong Jr. were limited to 11 and nine snaps respectively, while Kaleb Johnson was a healthy scratch. Despite the heavy usage of Jacobs, the Packers struggled on the ground, with the trio averaging just 1.9 yards per carry.
Among wide receivers, Matthew Golden led the group with 58 snaps, followed by Savion Williams with 36. Christian Watson registered 33 snaps before exiting the game after suffering a broken rib that caused him to spit up blood. Watson was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for testing before later returning to Lambeau Field. J. Michael Sturdivant logged 28 snaps and Bo Melton played 24, while Coleman Owen did not see the field.
At tight end, Jonnu Smith was made a healthy scratch for the first time in 2026, enabling the Packers to elevate edge defender Arron Mosby from the practice squad. Early in the contest, tight end Josh Whyle sustained a concussion and was ruled out, leaving Tucker Kraft (59 snaps) and Mark Redman (27 snaps) as the only available options at the position for the remainder of the game.
Line Reconfigurations and Defensive Snap Breakdown
Inuries to center Sean Rhyan and tackle Travis Glover prompted adjustments along the offensive line. Green Bay opted to move Laken Tomlinson from left guard to right guard, allowing Aaron Banks to step in as the starter at left guard, while Kevin Zeitler remained on the bench. Head coach Matt LaFleur explained in his post-game press conference, as reported by Yahoo Sports, that Tomlinson’s high level of play earned him the start and kept him from being benched. Practice squad call-up Mekhi Becton was chosen over Donovan Jennings as an active backup, bringing the total number of offensive linemen activated by Green Bay in 2026 to 13.
On defense, linebackers Isaiah McDuffie (70 snaps) and Ty’Ron Hopper (68 snaps) handled virtually every snap while Zaire Franklin missed another game due to a fractured shin. McDuffie played the Mike linebacker position while Hopper filled in at Will linebacker.
In the secondary, cornerbacks Keisean Nixon and Brandon Cisse anchored the perimeter with 69 snaps each. At safety, Xavier McKinney and Evan Williams played all 70 defensive snaps, while Javon Bullard returned to a major role in nickel packages, logging 54 snaps—representing 77 percent of the team’s defensive plays.
