The 2026-27 Major League Baseball offseason is underway, with teams beginning to address roster needs through free agency and trade discussions. Recent reports highlight specific targets for the New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Miami Marlins as they look to bolster their lineups and pitching staffs.

Phillies prioritize left-handed relief

According to reporting from The Athletic, the Philadelphia Phillies are actively searching for a left-handed setup man to strengthen their bullpen. While the team currently rosters Tanner Banks and Tim Mayza, the organization views them primarily as middle-innings options rather than high-leverage relievers.

The current late-inning unit under manager Don Mattingly consists entirely of right-handed pitchers, including Jonathan Bowlan, Caleb Kilian, Jhoan Duran, and Alex McFarlane. Potential free-agent solutions include top-ranked lefties such as Adrian Morejon, JoJo Romero, Alex Vesia, and Kris Bubic, though some of these players may pursue starting roles. Other available left-handed relievers include Tim Hill, A.J. Minter, Sean Newcomb, Steven Okert, AJ Puk, and Gregory Soto.

Yankees consider Paul Blackburn reunion

The New York Daily News reports that the Yankees are interested in bringing back setup man Paul Blackburn to help rebuild their bullpen. The team has already extended a $23.15 million qualifying offer to closer David Bednar, and while they are optimistic about his return, they remain focused on upgrading their setup crew.

Blackburn, ranked as the 33rd best free agent this offseason, enjoyed a successful 2026 campaign in his first full season as a reliever. The Yankees have a history of developing effective relievers to replace departing free agents, a strategy previously demonstrated when Blackburn stepped into the role vacated by Luke Weaver.

Marlins seek rotation and corner infield/outfield help

The Miami Herald reports that the Marlins are looking to add depth to both their starting rotation and bullpen, while also seeking a “corner bat” to play first base, third base, or in the corner outfield. Currently, Sandy Alcantara and Eury Pérez are the only guaranteed members of the starting rotation, though Max Meyer is expected to return next season following a neck injury.

Regarding corner positions, Gold Glove finalist Javier Sanoja provided capable play at third base, though the team views him as a versatile utility player. The Marlins’ current corner outfield options include Owen Caissie, Griffin Conine, and Heriberto Hernández, while Kyle Stowers transitioned to first base during the 2026 season. The organization continues to evaluate these areas for potential upgrades.
