Jannik Sinner is set to begin a new chapter in his career by teaming up with coach Magnus Norman starting from the 2027 season, replacing Darren Cahill. The upcoming partnership has drawn reactions from across the tennis world, including insights from Italian tennis legend Paolo Bertolucci.
The Impact of Magnus Norman
Bertolucci, a former world number 12 and 1976 Davis Cup winner, shared his analysis with La Gazzetta dello Sport regarding what Norman will bring to the Italian champion. Noting Sinner’s impressive resume of 95 weeks as world number one, five Grand Slam titles, and recent injury struggles, Bertolucci pointed out where the new coaching dynamic will make a difference.
Bertolucci noted that aggressive rallies have always formed the foundation of Norman’s tennis philosophy, aligning well with Sinner’s ability to increase shot speed during rallies. While the existing team will maintain Sinner’s current strengths in serving and tactical variations, Bertolucci stated that Norman will play a vital role in helping the player handle pressure and prepare mentally for major events and matches.
Return to the Tour
The coaching announcement coincides with Sinner’s upcoming return to competitive tennis following a right knee injury sustained after his Wimbledon victory in July. Sinner plans to make his comeback at the end of the year during the Six Kings Slam exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Former US Open finalist Greg Rusedski expressed confidence on his podcast that the player will not miss a beat despite the lengthy layoff. Comparing Sinner’s focus to legends like Andre Agassi and Roger Federer, Rusedski stated that a healthy and motivated Sinner will immediately return to his winning form.
Sinner will return to the tour without the world number one ranking, a position currently held by Alexander Zverev during the Italian’s absence. It remains to be seen whether Sinner will enter any warm-up tournaments prior to the Australian Open in 2027, a departure from his usual schedule of heading straight into the Grand Slam.
