Haas Explains Why Rafael Camara Replaces Ryo Hirakawa

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu stated that his choice to give Rafael Camara his Formula 1 debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix, instead of keeping Ryo Hirakawa in the car, came down strictly to professionalism. Komatsu clarified that this decision was made in the best interest of the team rather than reflecting any shortcomings by Hirakawa.

The Decision Behind the Driver Swap

Hirakawa stepped into the seat from Free Practice 3 onward at the Mexican Grand Prix after Haas parted ways with Esteban Ocon following a falling-out after Friday practice. Despite finishing seven tenths slower than team-mate Oliver Bearman on average, Hirakawa managed to score one point due to post-race penalties for rivals, leaving Komatsu impressed with his progress.

Although Hirakawa remained an option for the seat at Interlagos while balancing his commitments with the WEC championship-leading Toyota crew in Monza, Komatsu ultimately selected Camara, the team’s 2027 recruit. A crucial factor in this choice was a Testing of Previous Cars event where Camara decisively outpaced Hirakawa.

Komatsu acknowledged that while signing a driver early carries risks, his observations of Camara in Portimao provided immense confidence. He highlighted how Camara handled pressure, contained external stress, and created a focused environment while managing constantly changing track conditions during the shootout.

Further conversations with Camara leading up to the race reinforced Komatsu’s belief in the young driver’s ability to block out noise and simplify his approach. According to Komatsu, Camara avoided chasing uncontrollable outcomes and instead relied on his natural feel for the changing track.

Focusing on Team Interests

Reflecting on the heavy decisions made over a turbulent week, Komatsu emphasized that his role as team principal requires prioritizing the team’s best interests above all else. He personally informed Hirakawa of the decision over the phone, maintaining that every step was handled with complete professionalism.

Regarding the final three rounds of the season, Komatsu noted that no final decisions have been made yet, while acknowledging Formula 1’s intention to hold the Qatar and Abu Dhabi events despite regional instability.

Camara currently leads the Formula 2 championship and is scheduled to compete in the series during the upcoming Middle Eastern events.
