Glenn Maxwell has ended his international cricket career, leaving behind a legacy defined by destructive innings and unorthodox stroke play. Despite his many match-winning performances and three World Cup titles, the 38-year-old all-rounder departs with a sense of unfulfilled potential in the Test arena.
The Miracle of Mumbai
Maxwell delivered what many consider the greatest one-day international knock of all time during a must-win match against Afghanistan at the 2023 ODI World Cup. Australia slumped to 91 for 7 chasing a target of 292 before Maxwell combined with captain Pat Cummins to turn the game around. Suffering from severe cramps that left him barely able to walk and forcing him to collapse to the turf, Maxwell stayed at the crease to smash an unbeaten 201 runs from 128 balls, hitting 21 fours and 10 sixes to secure a semi-final spot.
Record-Breaking T20 Knock in Pallekele
In September 2016, Maxwell opened the batting in a T20 international for the first time in place of the injured Aaron Finch against Sri Lanka. He dominated the bowling attack with a 65-ball masterclass, reaching his maiden T20I century off 49 deliveries. Maxwell finished unbeaten on 145, helping Australia post a total of 263 for 3.
A Gritty Test Century in Ranchi
As one of only six Australians to score a century across all three formats, Maxwell demonstrated his adaptability during a 2017 Test against India in Ranchi. Playing in one of his rare Test appearances, he waited until his 56th delivery to hit a boundary before knuckling down for a resilient knock. He reached his only Test century with 104 runs from 185 balls.
Maiden International Hundred at the SCG
Maxwell scored his first international century during the 2015 World Cup against Sri Lanka at the Sydney Cricket Ground. His 51-ball hundred stood at the time as the fastest by an Australian in men’s ODIs and the second-fastest in tournament history. He hit 10 boundaries and four sixes before falling for 102 in another crucial victory en route to the title.
World Cup Speed Record Against the Netherlands
During the 2023 World Cup in New Delhi, Maxwell faced the Netherlands and smashed a 40-ball century to set the record for the fastest hundred in men’s Cricket World Cup history. Entering the crease midway through the 41st over, he accelerated rapidly, finishing an explosive over from Bas de Leede with consecutive boundaries before bringing up his milestone with a hook shot.
Equalling the T20I Century Record in Adelaide
Early the following year, Maxwell punished the West Indies bowling attack in a T20 international at the Adelaide Oval. After a cautious start, he accelerated to a 25-ball half-century and reached his century in 50 deliveries. He finished not out on 120 from 55 balls, featuring eight sixes, to claim his fifth T20I century and equal Rohit Sharma’s record for the most in men’s T20 internationals.
