League Two side Fleetwood Town recorded one of the Carabao Cup’s greatest ever upsets by eliminating Premier League champions Arsenal on penalties after a 1-1 draw at Highbury. The hosts took a first-half lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi before Viktor Gyokeres equalized early in the second half for Mikel Arteta’s side, which finished the match with ten men following a red card to Max Dowman.
First-Half Chaos and Shock Lead
The match experienced a bizarre start when a drone hovering above the stadium forced a lengthy stoppage just as play got underway. After the resumption, Arsenal threatened from a free-kick, but Piero Hincapie headed over. Fleetwood grew into the encounter, utilizing Batty’s long throws and defending resolutely to frustrate the visitors.
The hosts stunned the Premier League champions in the 21st minute as Loupalo-Bi chased a ball played in behind, outmuscled teenage defender Salmon, and poked the ball through goalkeeper Illan Meslier’s legs to open the scoring. Arsenal struggled to mount a convincing response before halftime, with Dowman dragging a shot wide and Kai Havertz heading over from a cross delivered by the lively teenager. Jurrien Timber also headed over from a late free-kick during seven minutes of added time, leaving Fleetwood with a remarkable 1-0 advantage at the break.
Second-Half Equalizer and Late Red Card
Arsenal required just five minutes following the restart to draw level, as debutant Cedach O’Neill delivered a low cross that caused chaos in the penalty area before Gyokeres poked home from close range for his first goal of the season. The visitors applied sustained pressure thereafter, with Havertz firing over and Myles Lewis-Skelly curling an effort narrowly wide.
As the match approached its final stages, manager Mikel Arteta kept his key players on the pitch in search of a winner. Fleetwood continued to pose a threat, forcing Meslier into a close-range save in the 82nd minute. The hosts’ chances of an upset received a significant boost when 16-year-old Dowman received a straight red card for reacting with a kick toward a Fleetwood defender following a strong challenge.
Ben White nearly snatched a victory for Arsenal in stoppage time with a shot across the box from Eberechi Eze, but goalkeeper Jay Lynch produced an outstanding save on the line before denying another attempt from the edge of the box.
Historic Penalty Shootout Victory
With the scores level after 90 minutes, the match proceeded straight to a penalty shootout. The first three penalties for each side were successfully converted, highlighted by Harrison Neal smashing home an impressive kick for the hosts and Andy Cannon following suit.
The pressure mounted on Bruno Guimaraes to keep Arsenal alive, but his penalty was read and saved by the Fleetwood goalkeeper. Conor Haughey then stepped up to send Meslier the wrong way, sealing a historic victory and sparking wild celebrations at Highbury.
The draw for the EFL Cup quarter-finals will take place on Wednesday, October 28, following the quarter-final tie between Liverpool and Chelsea at Anfield.
