Fleetwood Town goalkeeper Jay Lynch revealed that his team drew inspiration from Grimsby Town’s famous victory over Manchester United last year after pulling off a historic Carabao Cup upset. The League Two side secured a 5-3 penalty shootout win against Premier League giants Arsenal in the last 16 following a 1-1 draw in normal time at Highbury.

Inspiration from Previous Upsets

The monumental victory ranks among the greatest surprises in League Cup history, echoing Grimsby’s penalty shootout triumph over Manchester United in the second round last year. Fleetwood’s achievement arguably surpassed that feat by eliminating the previous season’s Premier League champions and Champions League finalists.

Lynch played a pivotal role in the match, producing several crucial saves—including stopping a penalty from Bruno Guimaraes during the shootout—before celebrating with the home supporters. Speaking to Sky Sports as reported by 101 Great Goals, Lynch said, “My voice has gone from organising the defence. The whole team throughout the game was magnificent. To beat the English champions – credit to these lads.”

He added that the terrible weather conditions played into their hands. “We took heart from Grimsby beating Man Utd last year. We kind of compared it. A typical night in Fleetwood. We were expecting a storm, we knew the conditions would be horrible, so we thought it might go in our favour. Amazing for the club, the town. Honestly it means everything to everyone.”

Fleetwood manager Matt Lawlor hailed the result as the greatest night in the club’s history, noting their long stint in non-league football prior to 2012. He admitted to Sky Sports that addressing the squad after the match was a challenge given the magnitude of the win.

Lawlor told Sky Sports, “It’s really hard to address the players. I’ve just said to enjoy it and then we’ve got a league game on Saturday and I didn’t want to be the bearer of the reality, but we’ve got a game. I just can’t believe it. The biggest night in the club’s history in terms of opposition coming to town and we’ve managed to beat the champions.”

Acknowledging the tactical approach required against world-class opponents, Lawlor explained that they could not afford to play an open game. “We knew before the game, we’re not stupid enough and not egotistical enough that you think we’re going to go to the best team in the country and the most organised team in the country and the best of the basics and the world-class players, in that we’re going to go and outplay them. So we had to ride our luck, we had to deny space, we had to deny options for them. And I think we did that really, really well in terms of the majority of the game,” he stated.

Carabao Cup Quarter-Final Draw Details

The draw for the EFL Cup quarter-finals will take place on Wednesday, October 28, immediately following the quarter-final fixture between Liverpool and Chelsea. Presenter Dave Jones will host the proceedings alongside former England defenders Conor Coady and Graeme Le Saux.

The match at Anfield begins at 20:00 GMT and will proceed directly to a penalty shootout if the scores remain level after 90 minutes. Consequently, the draw is expected to commence at approximately 22:00 GMT, subject to stoppage time and whether penalties are needed. All eight ties will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, while the Liverpool versus Chelsea match will also be shown on ITV1.
