Alex Eala Advances to Second Round of Hong Kong Open

Alex Eala secured a spot in the second round of the 2026 Hong Kong Open after defeating 18-year-old Emerson Jones with a score of 6-4, 6-3. The Filipina tennis player is now set to face world number 85 Tereza Valentova of Czechia in her next match.

Eala Praises Hong Kong Fans

Following her opening victory, Eala expressed her appreciation for the local crowd and acknowledged the talent of her opponent. As reported by sports.yahoo.com, Eala stated, “Super happy to be here in Hong Kong, super happy with the performance, and super happy to be in front of you guys again. It was a really good match. Emerson [Jones] is such a sweetheart off the court and such a great player on it. I am looking forward to many more matches together.”

Eala highlighted the significance of the location, noting that the proximity to her home country makes it an ideal place to conclude her season. “I cannot say enough how much I enjoy playing in front of you guys. There are few places in the world that would be better to cap off this amazing season than here in Hong Kong, very close to home,” she said.

Performance Analysis and Upcoming Challenges

While Eala emerged victorious, she faced challenges on her serve during the match, conceding four breaks to an opponent ranked 115 places below her. To progress further in the tournament, the 21-year-old will need to improve her serving consistency, especially following recent early-round exits in Singapore and Wuhan.

Eala’s path to a potential title in Hong Kong remains competitive. Should she defeat Valentova in the second round on Thursday, November 5, she could face China’s Wang Xinyu in the quarter-finals. A potential semi-final matchup against Maria Sakkari and a final against the retiring Sorana Cirstea are also possibilities in the tournament bracket.

The Hong Kong Open final is scheduled for Sunday, November 8. Eala is currently seeking her first title above the ITF level on the Asian continent.
